I’d like to think so – but where are you going with that question?

Agreed. Now, before we slide inexorably towards ‘Carry on Recruiting’, can we get to the point?

Of course. Sorry. It’s that ‘bedroom recruiter’ label again. We’ve talked about it before.

Yes?

Well, it needs further discussion. We’re all for people starting up their own recruitment businesses. Helping them is what we do. But the ‘bedroom’ thing? We have a problem …..

This isn’t going to take us back to innuendo territory, is it?

No! Seriously, it needs thinking through. We’re not going to deny that, on the face of it, starting your own business with the lowest possible overheads is a good idea.

You say ‘on the face of it’…”

Well, that’s it. It appears to make sense but when you look more closely we’re not so sure. Most of the research we see indicates that recruitment businesses do better when they are visible on ‘the high street’. When they have premises, somewhere to visit.

Even in the digital age?

Even in the digital age! It’s about being tangible. Being there for clients and candidates. Not being there is limiting.

Limiting? How so?

You set up your recruitment business. You run it from your spare bedroom. Maybe it suits you, not just because the costs are low, but also because you can have a flexible lifestyle…

It’s sometimes called ‘Lifestyle Recruitment’…but where is this going?

….the answer could be ‘not very far’. Suppose, and whey wouldn’t we, that you work hard at your business and you start to make a mark with clients. They start to rely on you. They want you to do more; word spreads, more clients come on board…..suddenly you need more space, people, kit. If you can’t deal with the growth, it’s not going to go far. Is it?

Take your point. But the big leap into setting up, finding premises, establishing the brand…it’s all, well, a big leap….
