Box Room or Box Clever

Starting up a recruitment business? A box room of be box clever?

Move from employee to employer and then there’s the demands…

If you’re thinking of starting a recruitment  business you will have realised that there is a lot to consider. As a recruitment professional you’re all too aware of the demands of the business. But take that step from employee to employer and you start to see the demands of – business.

Franchises, bedroom recruiters, lifestyle recruiters or something else?

Obviously then the ‘would be’ start up starts to look at the easiest option. Franchises spring to mind, but when your dream is to start your own brand, why would you work under someone else’s logo?

And of course there’s the route of ‘bedroom recruiter’. Stripping the overheads back to the bare minimum appears to make sense. Keeping it ‘lean’ seems to be a sound strategy. Except, it doesn’t exactly scream ‘high street presence’ and it doesn’t say much in the credibility stakes either. Even in the digital world of ‘e commerce’, where it’s possible to have a ‘virtual’ identity, sooner or later people want to meet people. Coffee shops are great for a chat, but if you’ve worked hard and impressed clients to the point where they want to check you out a bit more before putting that big contract your way, they’re going to want to visit your ‘office’. You balancing your lap top on the duvet cover while they perch by the dressing table is not really going to cut it. Is it?

Dont be small time strive for the big time

Perhaps that’s a bit harsh. But, even if you’ve equipped your spare bedroom as a fully functional office it’s still all going to look a bit domestic. A bit ‘small time’.

Oddly enough, it’s probably more difficult to step up from the back bedroom to an office than it is to start with an office in the first place. A year or so trading, but with no track record of rental or lease, doesn’t make for easy negotiations. It’s also the point at which questions are raised about public liability and how much HMRC know about how much of your home is an office.

In short, tempting though it is, the ‘lifestyle recruiter’ route, operating out of the spare bedroom is not so much a prudent first step forward, it’s more likely to hold you back.

But, if you don’t have massive financial resources, and you’re not an expert in legal, financial and property matters, how do you start?

You become box clever and achieve the results you want
