Age is more than just a number

The numbers show that, for some, age is more than just a number.

If you’re thinking of starting your own recruitment business you’re doubtless exploring options of how to get financial backing. What’s emerged from some recent research is that, in one funding organisation, some 60% of the applicants were in their 30s and 40s, but funding approvals were highest among those in their 50s.

There are several interpretations to be made from the research, but the overriding conclusion was rooted in this. Any youthfulness, potential and enthusiasm in a younger entrepreneur is cancelled out by older people simply having longer track records of credit, borrowing and, frankly, having more financial data.

It sounds unfair. It is. And it happens every day to people wanting to start their own recruitment business. Having racked up experience – as an employee – they want to put their knowledge and expertise to use in taking control of their own destiny.  But, as an employee they have no real record of owning a business, and therefore represent a greater risk.

They all prove less than accessible when you don’t have a record of trading.
