2018 Recruiters Beware

The end is nigh… Really?

Have you seen how many blogs and social media postings are discussing the imminent demise of the recruitment sector?
Some are saying that recruitment as we know it will die in 2018!

Big data, machine learning, ever more sophisticated algorithms – they’re all, some say, pointing to the end of recruitment as we know it.
At best, some pundits are saying that survival is possible, but only if recruiters become so much more clever, so much more adept at analysis, that the sector changes beyond recognition.

Hang on, just look back a little…

Like it hasn’t already…
Find someone of a certain age, or track down some old magazines, and see what the recruitment business was like 50 years ago…
Even 30 years ago.
It’s not alone as a sector in this but it was doing its best without the Internet.
Which of course was going to kill it… Except it hasn’t!

Even the gloomiest of commentators though accept that no matter how much more technology arrives in our place of work, ultimately the decisions will be made by people.

Driven, Ambitious and hungry for more?

The people who make the recruitment sector what it is are the thousands of professionals who, admittedly using techniques and technology unheard of a couple of decades ago,  match candidates to clients, people to positions, job seekers to jobs.
You do it based on experience, knowledge and genuine understanding.
You do it well, because you’re always trying to do it – better.

That’s a double edged sword.
Sometimes that drive to excel leads to a certain frustration.
Not for having the next bit of software or kit, but for doing it ‘your way’.
In short, to run your own desk your way or maybe your own recruitment business?

As we cross into 2018 great recruiters will not be hiding under rocks to shelter from the storms that will, as we’re told, wreak destruction to the recruitment sector.
You’ll be rising up to build on last year’s performance, build a bigger desk and face the future with drive and ambition.

What if that bigger desk was your own?

We are here to help you! You drive and ambition start your own consultancy, build your own businesses.

2018. The year when, all being well, you can deal with your own wellbeing

Wellbeing. It’s the big one for recruiters in 2018. Its importance and relevance is cropping up everywhere. From the HR professionals we hear that a climate of ‘wage stagnation’ will drive employers to offering wellbeing perks to offset stalled salaries.

Elsewhere we learn that investment in employee wellbeing will be key to employers’ staff retention strategies. Wellbeing we are told will benefit businesses and society.

How’s it looking for you?

As a recruitment professional it’s probably impacting on you in several ways. It’s something – another thing – you’ll need to get up to speed on so that you can advise clients on its place in job descriptions and their overall offering to attract candidates.

As to candidates – you’re probably going to be spending some of your time – more of of your time – on managing their expectations when it comes to the job they’re looking for.

And you, yourself? Is a new work station, a stand up desk maybe, going to offset your expectations? Or reduce the workload and stress of an ever demanding job? Demands that now include guiding clients and advising candidates about wellbeing because……you can see where this is going. We’ve just covered it.

If there was one thing that would really improve your wellbeing it would of course be running your own recruitment business, your way. Having control of your own future, and seeing realistic rewards for your efforts would really make yourself feel better about life. Except off course, from where you’re sitting – running a busy desk – the route to that position in life looks more stressful than where you already are.

You’ve doubtless already given it some thought.  Set up a business, getting all the legal stuff sorted out. Finding premises. Launching a brand. Website to do.

Before any of that you need to get financial backing in place. After all of that there’s the question of installing systems and software.

And what about your lifestyle?  Or to put it more bluntly – paying the mortgage and bills and maintaining the way you live now.

On the face of it, it doesn’t sound like the way to wellbeing. Does it?

Let’s cut to the chase.

At the Recruit Venture Group we provide 100% risk free funding, shares in, and dividends from, your own company and full access to our back office and systems. We guide you through the legalities of setting up your own business, help with branding and websites and even provide an invoicing service.

Supported to that extent you’re able to pay yourself a salary, and benefit from that stability and peace of mind.

And there’s no better way to wellbeing than peace of mind.

We need some reassurances too. If we’re going to support you in launching your own recruitment business we need to know that you’ve got  five years consecutive experience in the recruitment industry, and ideally three years track record within a sector you can operate in.

Once you’re up and running you may have ideas on furnishings and techniques that will help your staff with their wellbeing. You’ll have the time and freedom to guide and advise clients on how best to address the need for wellbeing as a recruitment and retention tool.

Yay! It’s the New Year. What will you be spending your bonus on?

Ah. Awkward. You didn’t get one.

Or if you did it’s not what you expected and it’s not exactly going to change your lifestyle.  Hold the booking for the Bahamas then.

It hurts doesn’t it? Especially as, yet again, you hit the targets, and delivered the numbers. And here it comes again, as predictably as the sales and the holiday commercials, that feeling of ‘if I was running my own recruitment business I’d be in control of my own destiny. I’d actually see something for my efforts’.

But then, (and it always goes like this doesn’t it – be honest) ‘with the mortgage, the bills, and the uncertainty of things as they are maybe not this year. Play it safe. Stay ‘in the job’’.

It’s understandable.

Or is it? Is it really the right thing to do? To, once again, put your ambitions, and your bonus, on the back burner.

Starting your own recruitment business is something that you’ve thought about time and time again. Countless recruitment professionals go through the possibility all the time, and never more so than at the turn of a year.

Experienced, talented and demonstrably successful they process the data that shows that, to all intents and purposes, they are running a business anyway. They find new clients, place the right candidates, and they deliver income. And, with every day, they acquire more experience that fuels their own ideas on how perhaps they could do it better.

Week on week they see opportunities, identify markets and recognise areas of growth. Month on month they refine and fine tune the client and candidate experience, sharpening the usp to the point where they become the go to person.

And year on year it comes to New Year and all that ambition runs into the buffers because to start up on their own means running a risk.

So what business doesn’t have some risk? I fact, what job doesn’t have some risk?

Find a way of starting up your own recruitment business with the risk turned down to the absolute minimum, and of course they’d do it.

At The Recruit Venture Group we provide 100% risk free financial backing for recruitment professionals to start up on their own. Simple as that.

Or at least the basic idea is as simple as that. The full package is rather more detailed. It includes help with the legal aspects of setting up your own business, finding premises, and organising your branding. Then, you get  get full access to our back office and systems, making you industry compliant and fully operational.

You’ll have shares in, and draw dividends from, your own company. On top of that you’ll be able to pay yourself a salary from the  moment you start trading – and the security that gives you is immense. It means you can concentrate on what matters – growing the business. Your business.

Now, we do need evidence that you are one of those seasoned, and ambitious, recruiters that we mentioned earlier. Someone with five years continuous recruitment experience, and three years knowledge of a specific sector in which you can operate. When we get to talk to you we’ll be able to see if your business plan makes sense – and that you exude the drive and passion we expect.

Thinking of starting your own recruitment business in 2018?

Get over it!

Wait! It’s not what it seems. The last thing we would ever do is discourage would be recruitment start ups.

No, what we’re concerned about is this. The start of a new year is obviously, and psychologically, the ideal time to launch a new business. New year, new you ….you know how the advice goes. But, it’s also the time when we’re swamped by a torrent of statistics and forecasts that, usually nowadays, predict downturns and uncertainty for business.

Just when you’ve geared yourself up to ‘do it’, the experts crank down your enthusiasm with a raft of reasons not to.

It’s already started. From the Chambers of Commerce, to the Cabinet; from the Brexit pundits to the BBC there are already warnings of growth slowing down, inflation speeding up, budgets plummeting and prices soaring.

The best advice for someone thinking of starting up their own recruitment business in 2018 then? Simply this. Get over it. Not the idea of starting up, but all the reasons why perhaps you shouldn’t.

Will there ever be a year when the predictions indicate a bright, problem free and totally rosy future? Of course not. Will another year in the same role as a recruitment professional totally satisfy you? Of course not.

Is there really any reason why 2018 should not be the year you start on your own? Again – of course not.

That is, if you really want to do it.

The big picture problems of national and international events will always be there. They’ll change, and we hope for the better, but they will still be there.

In truth, the local problems facing commerce and businesses on your patch will always be there too. But that’s what makes it worthwhile. As businesses adapt to market changes, flex their muscles to meet the challenges of skills shortages, Brexit and whatever else, they will need staff. Some will need lots of temporary staff; some will be seeking permanent people for manufacturing or logistics; others will be concentrating on finding two key directors – and they’ll all need help from bright, focussed, go getting recruiters.

And there’s your opportunity right there.

The problem though is that you’ve never yet found the way to launch your own business in a way that gives you maximum opportunity with minimal risk.

Hello!  We’re  The Recruit Venture Group.  We exist specifically to help recruitment professionals start up  their own businesses.

We provide 100% risk free funding. With shares in, and dividends from, your own company, and able to pay yourself a salary from the start, you’ll be ideally placed to concentrate on recruitment.

You’ll also  get full access to our back office and systems. That’s even more peace of mind. Not just because you don’t have to worry about those things but because you’ll be operational, efficient and competitive from day one.

We’ll have helped you at the outset with branding and finding premises. We’ll have guided you through the ‘legals’ of setting up your business, and we’ll stay with you to monitor your cash flow.

It’s a two way street. We want to know that you have five years consecutive experience in the recruitment industry, and ideally three years track record within the same sector. We want to see your business plan, and we most certainly want to gauge your drive and enthusiasm.

But, if you tick all of those boxes you’re going to be fine with pitching your business dream to us.  And frankly if you really have ticked all those boxes you’re going to be fine dealing with all those other ‘possible’  (let’s face it – we’re never going to believe predictions in the way we used to) challenges this year, or any year, might bring.

We know it’s going to be a special year for one recruitment start up!

Sir Alan chooses a recruiter as his business partner.

Let’s leave aside that this year, for the first time ever, Sir Alan chose two winners at the final of ‘The Apprentice’. And we’ll resist the temptation to comment on Sir Alan Sugar going into the sweets business. Enough said.

The interesting thing is he chose a recruiter as his business partner. So, if you’re thinking of starting up your own recruitment business in 2018 you’ve got the might of Sir Alan’s empire to contend with as a competitor as well!

More to the point, if you’re a recruitment professional and you’ve been following the show, and the fortunes of James White, you’ve doubtless been fascinated by his performance. You’ll also of course been interested in his ‘pitch’. The way he outlined his business plan, set out his objectives, and the way he took on the chin the warnings and comments about how he really needed a ‘usp’ and how he was ‘entering a crowded market’, and would face ‘intense competition’.

But you know all that. Like Mr White, you’ve got goals and ambitions too. You’ve got the entrepreneurial streak that propels an employee to employer.

And young James took a lot of stick over that too didn’t he? There was Sir Alan, and his panel, delivering stark warnings about how different it is to run your own business rather than be a successful practitioner within someone else’s.

To be fair, given that the panel are not experts in recruitment, they had some insightful points to make about how challenging it can be to, suddenly, have to think about setting up your own systems and support, and how, as a new business, you need to convince new customers to run with you.

But through it all was the running thread that James would be setting up a recruitment business with sound financial support and experienced business mentoring. This was – is – his big opportunity.

Are opportunities like that as rare as the producers of ‘The Apprenticee’ would have you believe? Well, we can’t comment on how it is in the online sweets business (and we wish Sarah Lynn every success)  but we can tell you that, armed with the right experience and a sound business plan you’ve got a real chance of winning the kind of support you need to start up your own recruitment business – with us.

At The Recruit Venture Group we specialise in helping recruitment professionals start up  their own businesses.

We guide you through the legalities of setting up, helping you to arrange premises, branding, website and marketing.

Vitally, we provide 100% risk free funding. You get  shares in, and dividends from, your own company. You’ll be able to pay yourself a salary from the start, giving you the  peace of mind to concentrate on recruitment. (That was a point the panel of judges and experts on ‘The Apprentice’ were very hot on).

You  get full access to our back office and systems which is even more peace of mind, and ticks another box that worried Sir Alan’s experts.

We do need to have some facts. Like we want to see that you’ve had five years continuous recruitment experience. We need to know you’ve got a business plan, and that you can demonstrate that you have the drive and ambition to do this.

Yes, it will be a tough interview, but if you’re prepared and your pitch is right we can help you make 2018 the year you start you own recruitment business.

The Box Set- advice at your fingertips

A seasonal guide for the recruitment start up.

It happens almost daily doesn’t it?  The e mails from Sky, or Virgin, or whoever your provider is. Those big bold updates in your inbox to tell you about what’s coming up, what you should watch and what to download. ‘Some great entertainment for you, all at your fingertips…..’

Now, we’re not suggesting that you shouldn’t indulge in a bit of binge watching over  Christmas and New Year. Who doesn’t do that? Neither are we saying that you should spend your break immersed in thoughts of work.

However…..if you really have been thinking about starting up on your own, then this is a seriously good time to do some reflecting and planning. And if you’re serious about it we’ve got some great ideas for you to download and look at – and – yes- they’re all at your fingertips!

Check out https://www.recruitventure.uk/blog/recruit-ventures-box-set for a start. It’s a virtual blockbuster that’s bound to raise your excitement levels. A real insight into starting up your own recruitment business and our new startup guides

We understand of course that as a recruitment professional, with the year coming to an end, you probably find it hard to relax. There’s the worry of making sure that every little detail of every application and placement on your desk has been properly processed, and that you’ve left everything in good order for the January return to work. There’s the thinking through of next year’s plans and the targets you’ve been set for the next twelve months.

It’s time to take a break from the work. We get that.

But, suppose, just suppose, that you could set up on your own. Run your own recruitment business. It would be the chance to do things your way. Put your experience to work for your own benefit.  Be in control of your own destiny. That would be some kind of different new year wouldn’t it?

Which means spending a bit of time over the break to start formulating those ideas of running your own business is actually quite a good thing.

Just like The Recruit Venture Group concept is a good thing.  As in you get complete risk free backing to start your own business. And, you’ll be able to pay yourself a salary from day one.

We’ll be there to help you start up, covering the legals, and sorting out branding and premises. You’ll have shares in your own business. You’ll have access to our back office and systems, making you operational and highly efficient from the moment you open your doors.

We do expect you to have five years continuous experience in recruitment, and probably three of those in a specific sector. And we want to know that you’re serious about starting up on your own. We think that’s reasonable.

But hey, take some time to look at some downloads first. You’ll find ours are more than entertaining. They’re inspiring.

And they’re at your fingertips.

Jark Ipswich supports BBC DIY SOS: Big Build Project.

When DIY SOS: The Big Build recently called upon the local community surrounding Mildenhall to supply tradesman and suppliers, Jark Ipswich quickly offered their services to recruit qualified labourers and help transform the home of a local man and his family.

With the renovation work to begin within a few weeks, their team of recruiters quickly began contacting candidates with details of the project and were overwhelmed by the offer of support and response they received.

“The response we received was fantastic, I had so many candidates willing to give us their time and support to the project, that I could have filled the job five times over” said Jamie Wingrave, Owner of Jark Ipswich.

Jark Ipswich supplied a team of seven skilled tradesman to the DIY SOS Big Build Project comprising of plasterers, painter/decorators, dry liners and a telehandler, and work began on the house on Tuesday 14th November 2017 presented by Nick Knowles.

In 2015, Suffolk man Simon had his life dramatically changed when after supporting his football team at an away game, he was set-upon by a gang of men, in an unprovoked attack leaving him fighting for his life in intensive care and subsequently permanently brain damaged.

Simon’s house had become unfit for purpose to support his rehabilitation and proving to be a massive strain on his family’s life. As part of the BBC’s DIY: Big Build project his home has been completely transformed to provide the space Simon and his family now need to build a better life for themselves.

Jark Ipswich Ltd provide recruitment services to the local Industrial, Construction and Healthcare businesses and are joint venture partners of The Recruit Venture Group who provide back office support services and funding to help recruiters launch and grow their own businesses.

AI gives recruiters back their time

Recently, in an interview, Eyal Grayevsky, the founder of Mya Systems, talked about how his own experience of the recruitment world was the catalyst for one of his company’s product developments.

It seems that once, when he was looking for work, he applied for some 40 jobs but only heard back from two possible employers. It led him to claim that ’85% of candidate applications fall into a “black hole”, and never receive a response’.

As a result Mya Systems have developed some Artificial Intelligence (AI) to deal with the ‘perceived, problem. ‘Mya’ is a robot – or more precisely ‘chatbot’ who ‘talks’ to candidates, leading them through key questions such as ‘Can you work in the evenings? Are you comfortable with the pay range? Do you have forklift experience? How soon can you start?

The idea is that recruiters, drowning in cv’s and applications, will use the ‘chatbot’ and its AI to give recruiters back their time by reducing the load and streamlining the process.

It’s not without some take up, or success, but in reality we’re a long way off a world where robots run recruitment agencies and all human contact is lost.

(Any comments on that last statement will be treated as ironic and probably require legal advice!)

To most of us of course all of this sounds like science fiction. But wait. It’s well within living memory that a recruitment agency’s systems centered on cardboard folders, carbon paper and an endless supply of ball point pens. The mention of computerised systems not just being available, but the industry standard, would have been laughed off. As science fiction.

With things progressing as rapidly as they do nowadays, the AI driven recruitment agency may well be nearer than we think.

That said, the current technology is an issue in itself for those wanting to start up a recruitment business. Take a typical recruitment consultant who is perhaps disenchanted by working for someone else. (Perhaps they think the company is run by robots. You know you were going to say it!). Experienced and ambitious they decide to start up on their own.

Even after they’ve formed a company, sorted out finance, premises, staff, a website, marketing and branding there’s the vital bit about finding clients and  candidates to do. And all of that is without setting up the IT and systems needed to be fully compliant and operational from day one.

That technology is expensive. And being prudent can backfire because operating systems are rife with false economies. They tend to need updating quite often too. And here’s a double edged sword to juggle with; the harder you work, the faster you  grow, and as you add more clients and candidates your business gets bigger still. Which means as your hard earned rewards from being your own boss start to come in – they go out again to buy bigger systems to run your bigger business. Doesn’t seem fair does it?

Let’s rewind for a minute. Go back to those first steps.

We specialise in helping recruitment professionals start up  their own businesses, and at The Recruit Venture Group we have a team who will help you incorporate a company, find premises, sort out your marketing strategy and even build your website.

All of that comes with our custom designed, specialist recruitment start up package that includes – in fact it’s based on – 100% risk free financial backing for you.

You’ll have shares in, and dividends from, your own company. You’ll be the boss.

And if that level of support isn’t peace of mind enough you’ll have the opportunity to really focus on what matters most. Getting on with recruitment. How? Because, able to pay yourself a salary you’ll be free of the worries that all too often hinder an entrepreneur.

So far, so good then. All of those initial worries are taken care of. But this is where we fast forward. We still haven’t addressed the question of the systems. The technology.

That’s sorted too with us. We’ll give you access to our complete back office systems. From candidate management to invoicing you’ll have road tested, up to the minute technology driving your new recruitment business.

Because we invest heavily in our own business – as well as yours – we keep those systems up to date. So, not only is it efficient and cost effective at the outset, we bear the costs of the upgrades and replacements as they become available and realistic. And when the time comes we’ll be ready to acquire AI, so that it’s there for you to use.

Of course, right now, and hopefully forever, it’s all about people really.

Why a new business can often fail…

Think about, why a new business often fails, And when it is likely to happen

You’re probably thinking that’s not the most ‘positive’ headline. Not the most encouraging. Well, if you’re still reading this blog, then it’s done its job by attracting your attention.

The fact is that if a new business, any new business, is going to fail there’s a good chance that it will do so within its first year. That’s the ‘when’.

As to the ‘why’, there are several reasons but high among them is that the entrepreneur – the owner and founder – was so busy setting it up, getting it right and sorting it out that they ran out of time to actually talk to, deal with, service  and this is important – really listen to – their customers.

That’s how you grow a business. By being involved with your customers, because that’s how you retain and develop the relationships that fuel your company’s future.

If you put that into the perspective of starting up a recruitment business it’s not difficult to identify the possible pitfalls.

Having raised some finance you’re probably going to have making the repayments on your mind, all the time. Meeting your obligations is important, but in reality it’s the risk that causes the worry. Suppose you don’t make enough to make the repayments? What’s at stake? Your house? It’s difficult to focus on customers when every day brings a worry about balancing the books.

Keeping the books in the black is a challenge in itself in the early days. Furniture, fixtures and fittings aside you’ve almost certainly invested in the systems and software you need to allow the business to operate. And they cost money. And you’re not sure they’re exactly right for the job. There’s something else to preoccupy your thoughts and eat up your time. Time when you could be talking to clients.

With money going out, but a while to go before the income starts to arrive, the issue of cash flow is going to hang heavy on you too.

Oh – and there’s your new website to sort, and the arrangements on the office seem to be ever more complicated. Will the landlords and their solicitors ever get it finally sorted?

You’ll need to talk to the media too. They know you by name of course but those local papers and national job boards don’t know your new company – so negotiating a line of credit takes time.

All of those things take time. Time when you could and should be talking with – and listening to – clients. Because if you don’t, you won’t build the relationships, and within a year the business, your business – will have added to the statistics to prove the point that many new businesses fail in the first year. Because they didn’t engage with their customers.

A bit of a vicious circle isn’t it?

It needn’t be.

At The Recruit Venture Group we provide 100%, risk free, backing to start your own business. And, you’ll be able to pay yourself a salary from day one.  There’s two of the big worries sorted straightaway.

You’ll have access to our back office and industry tested systems, making you fully operational from the moment you open your doors. There’s  another distraction nailed.

We’ll help with premises and legal issues. Another two concerns sorted.

In fact, with all of that support, you will have absolutely no reason  not to concentrate on your customers. And candidates. To get on with recruitment. To get on with your future.

We’re a business too; and a successful one. So we have certain criteria. For example  we expect you to have five years continuous experience in recruitment and that you’ve specialised in particular sector for a while. We want to know that you’re serious about starting up on your own.

Most importantly we don’t want you to fail. We want your fist year to be a success. A precedent for many more successful years to come.

3 simple steps

Three simple steps to setting up your own recruitment business.

This, as they say, is how we roll. It’s not a tutorial or teach in. It’s not a blog about the key stages in setting up a business from scratch. It’s the three stages in the process we use to help recruitment professionals start up their own companies.

With The Recruit Venture Group it goes like this.

1 Apply and Meet

It starts with you applying via our website.Tell us you’ve got five years continuous recruitment experience and that you’ve specialised in a specific sector; maybe you’ve run your own desk. Make it plain to us that you’ve got the drive and ambition to do this. That you really want to run your own recruitment business. Do that and we’ll meet. It’s your chance to tell us more about yourself, and your aims. An opportunity to explain where you want to operate, and what you think will make you stand out.

2. Discussion and Decision

Next, we need to crunch the numbers. Let’s look at your business plan, and weigh up your likely turnover and costs. It’s about putting in some time to examine what you’ll need and what you’ve got to offer. We’re not looking to make it over complicated. But we want to ensure that you’re on a firm footing. Really firm, as in 100% risk free funding and the ability to draw a salary from day one,

3. Set up and Start Up

Once we – and you – are happy with all of that we’ll get you set up. We’ll cover the ‘legals’ like incorporating your company. We’ll help find you premises, guide you on branding and marketing and give you access to our back office and admin systems.

Then it’s the launch. You’re off. Your own recruitment business, founded and supported so robustly that you can concentrate on building it.

It really is that straightforward. It’s your business. You’ll have shares in it and you’ll draw dividends from it. We’ve got your back, but we’re not constantly over your shoulder.

There are other ways of doing it.  A franchise, for example. But if you want to build a brand why wave someone else’s banner? There are bank loans and finance houses – but concern about repayments and risk are not conducive to clear headed focus on your new business.

You could strip costs back to the smallest you can make them by setting up in your spare room. A one person bedroom recruiter. Staying small won’t be particularly rewarding and growing fast will mean you’ll need backing to expand. You’ll just be seeking it later rather than sooner.

Why bother wandering down any of those difficult paths when just three simple steps could take you so much further – Apply Now
